Achieving Board Diversity

Board Diversity is an aim that associations are striving to be more inclusive, remain relevant and plan for the future. In order to achieve the objectives of diversity on boards takes time and effort. It requires a willingness to review the way your business is run, and who is in the boardroom, to see what can be done to improve it.

Diverse board members with skills, experiences and visions that are in line with the future of the business help the board to make better decisions, which improves the performance of the business and benefits all stakeholders – employees suppliers, customers, and communities. Diversity fosters new ways of problem-solving and thinking, creates opportunities and enhances the value of the company.

When we invite female board members, for instance, this will give us insight into the values and attitudes of female customers. This helps the board to make decisions that improve the quality of products and services, as well as strengthen relationships with consumers. This is why a well thought out diversity strategy is vital for the boardroom.

A variety of academics have proposed that improving the demographic makeup of the board can increase its knowledge base by providing information that is otherwise unnoticed by a homogenous board diversity board. A more recent study on board dynamics suggests that the demographic diversity of the board is not as important than what new directors can bring to the table in terms of knowledge in their experience, knowledge and connections.

Boards can pursue diversity in a variety of ways, such as setting targets as well as expanding the pool of candidates and encouraging inclusion across the company. The most important thing is to devise the right strategy that will meet your needs and be a good fit with your culture.
