Delirium Tremens: What It Is, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

alcohol withdrawal cure

Alcohol has what doctors call a depressive effect on your system. It slows down brain function and changes the way your nerves send messages back and forth. Many involve a combination of group psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medications.

  • Behavioral treatment programs are helpful for people who want to quit drinking.
  • For example, alcohol is a depressant, so if you suddenly stop consuming alcohol, you might experience symptoms of overstimulation such as anxiety or restlessness.
  • It’s a skill that, once learned, becomes a powerful tool you can use in any situation.
  • It teaches you healthy ways to cope with stress and techniques for overcoming the underlying causes of alcohol addiction.

Alcohol acts as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, thereby reducing the CNS excitatory tone. Chronic use of alcohol leads to an increase in the number of NMDA receptors (up regulation) and production of more glutamate to maintain CNS homeostasis Figure 1c. Because DTs can happen to people at various drinking levels, the best way to avoid DTs is to drink in moderation or not at all. Symptom-triggered therapy with benzodiazepines remains the cornerstone of management.

Diagnosis and Tests

They may also do a blood test called a toxicology screen to measure the amount of alcohol in a person’s system. Blood tests and imaging tests can show if organs, such as the liver, have been affected by a person’s intake of alcohol. You may want to take a family member cure for alcohol withdrawal symptoms or friend along, if possible. Repeated episodes of withdrawal and neuroexcitation results in a lowered seizure threshold as a result of kindling2 predisposing to withdrawal seizures.

Alcohol Withdrawal Stages and Severity

  • Please call to speak to a compassionate admissions navigator about your alcohol withdrawal treatment options.
  • This condition is avoidable with professional medical guidance and specialized programs that help people who want to lower their alcohol intake or stop drinking entirely.
  • They often will minimize your addiction by telling you it’s not that big of a deal.
  • They can explain more about treatment admissions, rehab insurance coverage, and paying for addiction treatment.
  • Alcohol is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, influencing the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
  • A supportive friend or family member can help you in many ways during withdrawal.

Detoxing at home usually takes longer because you should be cautious to avoid serious complications. Expect to feel some discomfort, including anxiety, sweating or irritability. If you feel more severe symptoms, such as paranoia, increased pulse, or tremors sometimes called alcohol shakes, you should taper more slowly and consider seeking professional help. If you feel severe symptoms, such as hallucinations, rapid heartbeat or disorientation, call 911 immediately. Eating nutritious food, exercising, and getting enough sleep can help reduce some withdrawal symptoms, such as mood swings. If don’t have much of an appetite, you may want to take a multivitamin or drink a beverage high in electrolytes, such as a sports drink.

Diagnosis

Those with severe AWS experience severe anxiety and moderate to severe tremor, but they do not have confusion, hallucinations, or seizures. When not properly treated, AWS can progress to delirium tremens (Table 38–10). We publish material that is researched, cited, edited and reviewed by licensed medical professionals.

Alcohol Withdrawal Timeline

  • Medically-assisted withdrawal can ensure that you are safe and help to minimize unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
  • Vitamins B1 (thiamine), B9 (folate), B12 and C are often recommended to aid recovery.
  • When in doubt, clinicians can refer to the DMS-V criteria for diagnosis.
  • Minor alcohol withdrawal symptoms typically set in about 6 hours after your last drink and may last 4 to 48 hours.

If your symptoms are mild (or perhaps even moderate), your doctor may suggest that you reach out to a friend or family member to help you monitor your symptoms at home. AWS can evolve in a few hours or a few days but often develops between 6 to 24 hours after your last drink. Once you stop drinking, though, the sudden change may come as a shock to your brain, which altered some of its chemistry to make up for the alcohol’s presence.

For example, a person presenting after 5 days of abstinence, whose peak of withdrawal symptoms have passed, may need a lower dose of benzodiazepines than a patient who has come on the second day of his withdrawal syndrome. However, in the presence of co-morbidities shorter acting drugs such as oxazepam and lorazepam are used. A ceiling dose of 60 mg of diazepam or 125 mg of chlordiazepoxide is advised per day.18 After 2-3 days of stabilization of the withdrawal syndrome, the benzodiazepine is gradually tapered off over a period of 7-10 days. Patients need to be advised about the risks and to reduce the dose, in case of excessive drowsiness.
